Dresden, le 26 avril 2013 – Courtney Hattie et Emily Schmidt, de Victoria, ont gagné la médaille de bronze au tremplin synchronisé féminin ouvert de trois mètres, vendredi, dans la Compétition internationale jeunesse de plongeon.
C’est la deuxième médaille de bronze du Canada dans la compétition groupes d’âge qui présente plusieurs des meilleurs plongeurs juniors au monde. Caeli McKay, de Calgary, a terminé troisième au tremplin féminin d’un mètre chez les 14-15 ans, jeudi.
Christina Wassen et Elena Wassen, d’Allemagne, ont gagné la médaille d’or au tremplin synchronisé de trois mètres avec 281,07 points. Leurs compatriotes Friederike Freyer et Tina Punzel se sont classées deuxièmes avec 264,27 et Hattie et Schmidt, qui concourent ensembles pour la première fois, ont obtenu 254,52 points.
«Nous avons eu beaucoup de plaisir et nous avons gagné la médaille en équipe, a dit Hattie, qui a deux ans de plus que sa partenaire. Tous nos plongeons ont été pas mal constants.»
Le duo a fait face à quelques défis en essayant de se préparer pour cette compétition.
«Nous n’avons eu que deux semaines d’entraînement et il a fallu beaucoup de travail pour nous assurer que nous avions les mêmes mouvements à partir des bras lors des envolées jusqu’au synchronisme et à l’entrée, a dit Schmidt. Nous espérons que c’est le début de quelque chose de nouveau.»
Au tremplin masculin d’un mètre chez les 16-18 ans, Tyler Roberge, d’Edmonton, a terminé neuvième et Dylan Grisell, d’Etobicoke, en Ontario, 11e.
Au tremplin masculin de trois mètres chez les 14-15 ans, Peter Thach Mai, de Montréal, s’est classé sixième et Félix Leathead, de Montréal, huitième.
La compétition se poursuivra jusqu’à dimanche.
SECOND BRONZE FOR CANADA AT INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DIVING MEET
Dresden, April 26th 2013 – Courtney Hattie and Emily Schmidt of Victoria won the bronze medal in the open women’s three-metre synchro event on Friday at the International Youth Diving Meet.
It was Canada’s second bronze at the age group competition which features many of the top junior divers in the world. Caeli McKay of Calgary was third in the women’s 14-15 age group one-metre on Thursday.
Christina Wassen and Elena Wassen of Germany took the three-metre synchro gold with 281.07 points, their compatriots Friederike Freyer and Tina Punzel were second at 264.27 and Hattie and Schmidt, competing together for the first time, scored 254.52.
“We had a lot of fun and we won the medal as a team,” said Hattie, two years older than her partner. “All our dives were quite consistent.”
The pair faced some challenges trying to prepare for this competition.
“We’ve only been practicing for two weeks and it’s been a lot of work to make sure we have the same movements from the arm swings on take-offs to the synchronization and landings,” said Schmidt. “We hope this is the start of something new.”
In the men’s 16-18 age group one-metre, Tyler Roberge of Edmonton was ninth and Dylan Grisell of Etobicoke, Ont., 11th.
In the boys 14-15 three-metre, Peter Thach Mai of Montreal was sixth and Felix Leathead of Montreal eighth.
Competition continues through to Sunday.
