Dubaï, le 21 mars 2013 – Les médaillées olympiques de bronze Roseline Filion, de Laval, et Meaghan Benfeito, de Montréal, ont gagné la médaille d’argent à la tour synchronisée féminine de 10 mètres et Jennifer Abel, de Laval, et Pamela Ware, de Beloeil, au Québec, en ont ajouté une de bronze au tremplin synchronisé féminin de trois mètres, jeudi, lors de la première journée de la deuxième étape du circuit de la Série mondiale de plongeon de la FINA.
À la tour synchronisée, la championne olympique Chen Ruolin et Huxia Liu, de Chine, ont été les gagnantes avec 353,04 points. Filion et Benfeito ont suivi avec 331,44 et Yulia Koltunova et Natalia Goncharova, de Russie ont terminé troisièmes avec 315,35.
Ce sont les mêmes trois premières positions que lors de l’ouverture de la saison la semaine dernière à Beijing, mais les Canadiennes ont amélioré leur note par 15 points pour réduire l’écart par rapport aux puissantes Chinoises.
« Nous nous sommes impressionnées nous-mêmes de terminer à environ 20 points des Chinoises, a dit Filion. Nous nous rapprochons. Nous savons qu’elles sont battables et nous devons continuer de nous rapprocher. Ce genre de note si tôt dans la saison est très positif pour nous et cela augure bien pour le restant de la saison. »
Le duo se croit déjà de retour dans le rythme de la compétition.
«Aujourd’hui, nous étions beaucoup plus à l’aise après avoir concouru plus la première fois depuis les Jeux olympiques la semaine dernière. Cette compétition a suivi une solide semaine d’entraînement ici et cela nous a redonné notre confiance.»
Au tremplin synchronisé de trois mètres, He Zi et Wang Han, de Chine, a obtenu la victoire avec 331,20 points. Tania Cagnotto et Francesca Dallape, d’Italie, ont terminé deuxièmes avec 297,90 et Abel et Ware ont obtenu la médaille de bronze avec 296,10. Seulement quatre points ont séparé la sixième de la deuxième places.
«Après notre dernier plongeon, nous avons vu à quel point c’était serré et mon coeur battait très vite quand je regardais les autres plongeuses terminer, a dit Ware. Nous étions un peu nerveuses.»
C’était la première médaille internationale pour Abel et Ware, à leur première saison ensembles. Elles avaient terminé cinquièmes la semaine dernière. Abel a gagné la médaille olympique de bronze avec Émile Heymans dans la même épreuve l’été dernier à Londres.
«Mais en regardant les notes, nous avons encore beaucoup de travail à faire avec nos plongeons individuels et notre synchronisme. Malgré tout c’est pas mal bon pour commencer l’année. Nous avons simplement besoin de continuer à pratiquer et nous deviendrons meilleures.»
La compétition se poursuivra vendredi avec le tremplin féminin de trois mètres avec en vedette Abel. La Série mondiale de la FINA est passée de quatre à six étapes cette saison et est réservée aux plongeurs classés parmi les huit premiers au monde dans chaque épreuve.

CANADA WINS TWO MEDALS AT DIVING WORLD SERIES
Dubai, March 21st 2013 – Olympic bronze medallists Roseline Filion of Laval and Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal won silver on 10-mere synchro and Jennifer Abel of Laval and Pamela Ware of Beloeil, Que., added bronze on three-metre synchro on Thursday to open the second stop on the FINA World Series diving circuit.
On synchro tower, Olympic champion Chen Ruolin and Huxia Liu of China were the winners with 353.04 points. Filion and Benfeito followed at 331.44 and Yulia Koltunova and Natalia Goncharova of Russia were third at 315.35.
It was the same 1-2-3 finish at last week’s season opener in Beijing but the Canadians bettered their score by 15 points to close the gap on the powerful Chinese.
“We were impressed with ourselves to finish within about 20 points of the Chinese,” said Filion. “We are getting closer. We know they are beatable and we have to keep chipping away. That kind score this early in the season is very positive for us and augurs well for the rest of the season.
The pair feel like they are already back into the beat of competition.
“Today we were a lot more comfortable after competing for the first time since the Olympics last week. That competition followed by a solid week of training here gave us back our confidence.”
On three-metre synchro He Zi and Wang Han of China collected the win with a 331.20 score. Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dallape of Italy were second at 297.90 and Abel and Ware took the bronze at 296.10. Only four points separated sixth from second place.
“After our last dive we saw how close it was and my heart was beating so fast as I watched the other divers finish,” said Ware, also an Olympic team member in 2012. “We were a little nervous.”
It was the first international medal for Abel and Ware, in their first season together. They were fifth last week. Abel won the Olympic bronze medal with Emile Heymans in the event last summer in London.
“But looking at the marks we still have a lot of work to do with our individual diving and synchronization. Still it’s pretty good for the beginning of the year. We just need to keep practicing and we are going to keep getting better.”
Competition continues Friday with the women’s three-metre featuring Abel. The FINA World Series has expanded from four to six-stops this season and is reserved for the top-ranked eight divers in the world in each event.
