Gatineau, 5 mai 2013 - Meaghan Benfeito, de Montréal, a remporté sa deuxième victoire internationale en carrière, dimanche, en terminant devant deux plongeuses chinoises pour se classer première à la tour féminine de 10 mètres dans la Coupe Canada Gillette.
Jennifer Abel, de Laval, au Québec, et Pamela Ware, de Beloeil, au Québec, ont ajouté une médaille d’argent au tremplin synchronisé féminin de trois mètres. Le Canada a terminé la compétition avec cinq médailles. Samedi, Abel et Ware ont terminé première et deuxième au tremplin individuel de trois mètres et Benfeito et Roseline Filion, de Laval, au Québec, se sont classées deuxièmes à la tour synchronisée.
À la tour, Benfeito a offert une performance exceptionelle dans la finale avec de grosses notes pour ses plongeons avant, arrière et avec vrilles, obtenant 393.70 points. Lian Jie, de Chine, a suivi avec 387,40 et sa compatriote Huang Xiachui a terminé troisième avec 316,95.
«Je savais que Jie serait ma principale adversaire dans la lutte pour la médaille d’or, mais j’ai essayé de ne pas trop y penser pendant la compétition, a dit Benfeito. Mais les battre toutes les deux et obtenir la victoire ici est très satisfaisant. Les Chinoises sont les meilleures au monde dans ce sport et elles sont celles que nous essayons de rattraper.»
Au tremplin synchronisé féminin de trois mètres, Liu Jiao et Lin Qu, de Chine, ont gagné la médaille d’or avec 317,70 points. Abel et Ware ont suivi avec leur meilleure note de la saison de 307,95 et Samantha Mills et Qin Fan, d’Australie, ont terminé troisièmes avec 279,60. Les Canadiennes, à leur première saison ensemble, n’ont pas eu beaucoup d’occasions de s’entraîner au cours du dernier mois puisque Ware a participé au circuit de la Série mondiale.
«C’était pas mal bon, a dit Ware. Notre plus gros défi a été de bien faire nos sauts d’approche, mais cela s’est amélioré à chaque plongeon. Lors du troisième plongeon, je n’ai pas fait mon cercle des bras avant le plongeon donc je suis arrivée un peu courte. Nous avons de nouveau montré, aujourd’hui, que nous nous adaptions bien l’une à l’autre, nous excellons sur les mêmes plongeons et nous avons un style semblable.»
«Revenir avec une performance comme celle-ci est très encourageant pour l’avenir, a dit Abel. C’est excellent d’atteindre nos objectifs et de gagner une médaille devant notre foule locale.»
Dans la finale du tremplin de trois mètres masculin, François Imbeau-Dulac, de St-Lazare, au Québec, était dans la course pour au moins une médaille de bronze, mais a terminé sixième après avoir raté son dernier plongeon, le très difficile deux sauts périlleux et demi avant avec trois vrilles en position carpée.
«J’ai glissé lors de mon envolée et j’ai tout de suite su que j’avais des problèmes, a dit Imbeau-Dulac, un olympien en 2012, à propos de son dernier plongeon. C’est décevant. J’étais satisfait de mes cinq précédents plongeons, mais à ce niveau j’ai besoin que mes six plongeons soient solides.»
He Chao, de Chine, a gagné la médaille d’or.
À la tour synchronisée masculine de 10 mètres, Philippe Gagné, de Montréal, au Québec, et Maxim Bouchard, de St-Constant, au Québec, ont terminé cinquièmes.
La prochaine étape du Grand Prix aura lieu plus tard cette semaine à Fort Lauderdale.

MEAGHAN BENFEITO BEATS THE CHINESE FOR GOLD AT 2013 GILLETTE CANADA CUP
Gatineau, May 5th 2013 - Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal earned her second career international victory on Sunday finishing ahead of two Chinese divers for first place on women’s 10-metre tower at the 2013 Gillette Canada Cup.
Jennifer Abel of Laval, Que., and Pamela Ware of Beloeil, Que., added a silver on women’s three-metre synchro. Canada ended the meet with five medals. On Saturday, Abel and Ware were 1-2 on individual three-metre and Benfeito and Roseline Filion of Laval, Que., were second on 10-metre synchro.
On tower, Benfeito highlighted a steady performance in the final with big marks for her forward, inward, backward and twisting dives accumulating 393.70. Lian Jie of China followed at 387.40 and her compatriot Huang Xiachui was third at 316.95.
‘’I knew Jie would be my top rival for the gold but I tried not took think about that too much during the competition,’’ said Benfeito. ‘’But to beat both them and get the win here is very satisfying. The Chinese are the best in the world in this sport and they are the ones we are trying to catch.’’
On women’s three-metre synchro, Liu Jiao and Lin Qu of Chin won the gold medal with 317.70. Abel and Ware followed with a season’s best 307.95 and Samantha Mills and Qin Fan of Australia were third at 279.60. The Canadians, in their first year as a partnership, didn’t have much opportunity to practice over the last month with Ware on the FINA World Series circuit.
‘’It was pretty good,’’ said Ware. ‘’The biggest challenge for us was getting our hurdles right but it improved with every dive. On the third dive I didn’t do my arm circle before the dive so I landed a bit short. We showed again today that we adapt well to each other, we excel on the same dives and have a similar style.’’
‘’To come back with a performance like this is very encouraging for the future,’’ said Abel. ‘’It’s great to reach our objectives and win a medal in front of our home crowd.’’
In the men’s three-metre final, François Imbeau-Dulac of St-Lazare,Que., was in the hunt for at least a bronze medal but wound up sixth after he missed his last dive, the very difficult forward two and half somersault with three twists in pike position.
‘’I slipped on the take-off and I knew right away I was in trouble,’’ said Imbeau-Dulac, a 2012 Olympian, about his last dive. ‘’It’s disappointing. I was happy with my five previous dives but at this level I need to be solid on all six.’’
He Chao of China won the gold medal.
On men’s 10-metre synchro, Philippe Gagné of Montréal, Que., and Maxim Bouchard of St-Constant, Que., were fifth.
The next stop on the Grand Prix goes later this week in Fort Lauderdale.
