Winnipeg, le 3 mars 2013 – La médaillée olympique Jennifer Abel, de Laval, au Québec, a lancé sa saison 2013 avec une victoire au tremplin féminin de trois mètres, dimanche, pour conclure les championnats nationaux d’hiver de plongeon.
Abel a simplement été un peu meilleure dans quatre des cinq plongeons que sa principale adversaire Pamela Ware, de Beloeil, au Québec, pour terminer première avec 341,40 points. Ware, aussi membre de l’équipe de Londres 2012, a suivi avec 338,30 tandis qu’Emma Friesen, de Victoria, a obtenu la médaille de bronze avec 303.75.
«C’est bon de gagner en tenant compte que ce fut une compétition aussi serrée, a dit Abel, âgée de 22 ans, médaillée olympique de bronze au tremplin synchronisé de trois mètres avec Émilie Heymans. J’ai fait quelques erreurs, mais j’ai effectué des changements techniques à mes plongeons cette année et je suis satisfaite de la manière dont cela progresse.»
À la tour masculine de 10 mètres, Maxim Bouchard, de St-Constant, au Québec, a décroché son premier titre national senior avec 411,00 points. Philippe Gagné, de Montréal, a terminé deuxième avec 386,05 et Vincent Riendeau, de Pointe-Claire, au Québec, troisième avec 378,60.
«J’ai été très constant toute la journée, a dit Bouchard. C’est très excitant de remporter un premier titre, spécialement parce que les gars étaient forts dans cette épreuve. Ce sera une bataille pour voir qui fera l’équipe pour les championnats du monde cette année.»
En plus des médailles des championnats nationaux, les athlètes se battaient pour être inclus dans les équipes nationales qui représenteront le Canada dans différentes compétitions dans le circuit du Grand Prix de la FINA 2013, incluant la Coupe Canada qui aura lieu du 2 au 5 mai 2013 à Gatineau, au Québec.
Les autres champions nationaux qui ont été couronnés cette semaines sont, chez les femmes: Meaghan Benfeito, de Montréal, à la tour de 10 mètres; Pamela Ware et Carol-Anne Ware à la tour synchronisée de 10 mètres et Abel et Pamela Ware au tremplin synchronisé de trois mètres.
Chez les hommes, les autres vainqueurs ont été Cody Yano, d’Edmonton, au tremplin de trois mètres, François Imbeau-Dulac, de St-Lazare, au Québec, et Marc Sabourin-Germain, de Mascouche, au Québec, au tremplin synchronisé de trois mètres, et Bouchard et Gagné à la tour synchronisée de 10 mètres.

JENNIFER ABEL PREVAILS ON THREE-METRE AT WINTER NATIONALS
Winnipeg, March 3rd 2013 – Olympic medallist Jennifer Abel of Laval, Que., launched her 2013 season with a victory on women’s three-metre springboard on Sunday to conclude the Winter Nationals diving competition.
Abel was just a bit better on four of the five dives than her chief rival Pamela Ware of Beloeil, Que., to finish first with 341.40 points. Ware, also on the 2012 London team, followed at 338.30 while Emma Friesen of Victoria took the bronze at 303.75.
“It was a nice win considering it was such a close competition,” said Abel, 22, an Olympic bronze medallist on three-metre synchro with Emilie Heymans. “I made a few errors today but I’ve made some technical changes to my diving this year and I’m pleased with how it is progressing.”
On men’s 10-metre tower, Maxim Bouchard of St-Constant, Que., notched his first national senior crown with 411.00 points. Philippe Gagné of Montreal was second at 386.05 and Vincent Riendeau of Pointe-Claire, Que., third at 378.60.
‘’I was very consistent all day,’’ said Bouchard. ‘’It’s very exciting to get a first title especially that the guys were strong in this event. It’s going to be battle to see who makes the world championship team this year.’’
In addition to national championship medals, the athletes were competing for inclusion on national teams that will represent Canada at various events on the 2013 FINA Grand Prix circuit, including the Canada Cup, May 2nd to May 5th 2013, in Gatineau, Quebec.
Other national champions crowned this week were for the women: Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal on 10-metre; Pamela Ware and Carol-Anne Ware on 10-metre synchro and Abel and Pamela Ware on three-metre synchro.
