Pékin, le 17 mars 2013 - Meaghan Benfeito, de Montréal, a complété une bonne première étape dans le circuit de la Série mondiale de plongeon de la FINA pour le Canada, dimanche avec une médaille d’argent à la tour féminine de 10 mètres.
Le Canada a terminé la compétition avec trois médailles d’argent. Benfeito a aussi gagné la médaille d’argent à la tour synchronisée de 10 mètres avec Roseline Filion, de Laval, au Québec, vendredi, et Jennifer Abel, de Laval, a terminé deuxième au tremplin féminin de trois mètres, samedi.
La championne olympique Chen Ruolin, de Chine, a gagné la médaille d’or à la tour de 10 mètres avec 403,75 points. Benfeito a suivi avec 362,25 et Pandelela Rinong Pamg, de Malaisie, a terminé troisième avec 337,75. Filion s’est aussi qualifiée pour la finale et s’est classée sixième avec 303,90.
Benfeito, médaillée olympique de bronze avec Filion à la tour synchronisée de 10 mètres, a débuté la finale avec un solide plongeon avant pour égaler la note de Chen de 76,50 points. Elle a reçu des évaluations partagées pour son plongeon arrière dans la troisième ronde avec des notes des juges allant de 7,0 à 8,5. Elle espérait probablement mieux aussi pour son plongeon en équilibre qu’elle avait réussi pour une grosse note en route vers le titre national il y a deux semaines.
La Série mondiale de la FINA est passée de quatre à six étapes cette saison et est réservée aux plongeurs classés parmi les huit premiers au monde dans chaque épreuve.
La prochaine étape du circuit aura lieu de vendredi à dimanche (21 au 23 mars) à Dubaï.

SILVER SUNDAY FOR MEAGHAN BENFEITO AT WORLD SERIES
Beijing, March 17th 2013 - Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal capped a strong opening FINA World Series event for Canada on Sunday with a silver medal in the women’s 10-metre tower.
Canada finished the competition with three silver medals. Benfeito also took silver in 10-metre synchro with Roseline Filion of Laval, Que., on Friday and Jennifer Abel of Laval was second on women’s three-metre springboard on Saturday.
Olympic champion Chen Ruolin of China took the 10-metre gold with 403.75 points, Benfeito followed at 362.25 and Pandelela Rinong Pamg of Malaysia was third at 337.75. Filion also reached the final placing sixth at 303.90.
Benfeito, an Olympic bronze medallist with Filion in 10-metre synchro, opened the final with a strong forward dive equaling Chen’s score of 76.50 points. She received mixed reviews for her backward dive in the third round with judges marks ranging from 7.0 to 8.5. She was probably hoping to fare better as well on her armstand dive which she had nailed for a big score en route to the national title two weeks ago.
The FINA World Series has expanded from four to six-stops this season and is reserved for the top-ranked eight divers in the world in each event.
The next stop on the circuit is this Friday to Sunday (March 21-23) in Dubai.
